A Reexamination of the Case against Evolution

It is probably fair to say that, by forcing Bryan to defend a literal interpretation of the Bible (which Bryan never actually advocated), Darrow accomplished his goal of debunking religion, but also precluded any discussion of the other grounds for the attack on evolution. The question is, is it possible to make a good case against the teaching of evolution, at least as the situation stood in 1925? There are four areas in which Darwinism and the teaching of evolution were being criticized that might resonate today: (1) the democratic argument that parents should be able to determine what is taught in schools and have a say in what is accepted as valid science; (2) the scientific standing of Darwin as it existed in the 1920s; (3) Darwinism’s association with eugenics; and (4) the moral implications of evolution. Let’s briefly examine each one.
